Music Composition

Adelaide's Matilda

For two C flutes and guitar: 4 minutes- Adelaide's Matilda is a Celtic folk-inspired piece based on the classic tune made famous in the Australian song Waltzing Matilda.

Crossroads Fair

For tenor trombone, bass trombone, and piano: 5 minutes- Crossroads Fair is a musical journey through bliss, confusion, darkness and depression, and finally triumph. The piece was somewhat of an experiment in using a pentatonic theme in many different ways; in this case the theme is the Irish session tune Star of the County Down.

Daughter of the Light

For flute choir (Piccolo, 3 C Flutes, Alto Flute, Bass Flute): 15 minutes total (Mvt I: 4 mins., Mvt. II: 8 mins., Mvt. III: 3 mins.)- Daughter of the Light is a suite based on Scottish and Irish folk music. It's in three movements: a jig, a waltz, and a reel. The suite has been called crossover music between the classical and folk worlds, and it was written to be just that.

Elemental Suite

For two C flutes: 17 minutes total (Mvt. I: 4.5 mins., Mvt. II: 3.5 mins., Mvt. III: 4 mins., Mvt. IV: 5 mins.)- Elemental Suite is a set of three flute duets inspired by the ancient concept of the elements: Earth, Air, Water, and Fire. They may be performed as a set or separately, and each have unique inspiration from ideas, locations, and legends. The recordings below were done for All Those Who Wander's crossover album, Elements of Earth, and feature found sounds before the written music.

The Gardener and the Lotus

For pierrot ensemble (flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano): 8.5 minutes- This piece was written in honor of my grandfather, who passed away in December of 2012. He was a fantastic speaker and tireless Christian missionary and teacher, and the piece is based on his words and life as seen through the eyes of his admiring grandson.

Sonatina for Flute and Piano

For flute and piano: 10 minutes- This solo piece for flute and piano was based on a single theme that developed into an exploration of extended tonality and a broadening of classical flute technique. The piece is a display of virtuosity for both the flautist and pianist as well as an exploration of a unique style of interaction between the two instruments. Thematically, the piece is based on the classic "Sleeping Beauty" storyline in which the villain is lurking at the opening of the story, then the protagonist comes but is eventually poisoned by the villain. The knight in shining armor arrives to rescue the protagonist, who is finally transformed once again into a symbol of purity, strengthened by the struggle.

Theme and Variations on Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming

For unaccompanied flute: 3 minutes- This short piece is a theme and variations on the beautiful and memorable theme of Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming. The tune and lyrics of the song inspired me to write this piece to perform at my church when I was young.
